Full Moon, October 17, 2024
Hello You,
The moonlight through my bedroom window was so intensely bright last night that I got very little sleep and wound up with a killer case of what my dearly departed neighbour Donnie used to call, moonstroke. Despite being the kind of tired that even the strongest coffee can’t remedy, and having what feels like a head stuffed full of dandelion fluff, I’m pretty darned excited about sending you the second official Voice of the Moon monthly!
This issue contains a nifty one-page old-school zine called Advice for New Witches, as well as a timely Tidewrack Divination.
Dear Destiny will be back next month, and I’ll be sure to leave the info as to how you can submit your questions for Destiny at the end of this post.
Advice for New Witches - a zine!
Some of you may recognize the title of this zine from the character Beatrice Dunn’s musings at the end of The Witches of New York. Back when I was preparing for the novel’s publication in Canada, the US and the UK, I interviewed several friends and asked them to offer their advice for new witches in a series of short videos. I played a montage from those interviews at my launch, and it was such a powerful, magical experience that it has stuck with me ever since as a project/book idea/podcast/something-or-other waiting to be further explored.
If, like me, you’re of a certain vintage, then single sheet zines folded into pocket-sized booklets will bring back a flood of memories of DIY underground punk scene and riot grrrl publications from the 80s and 90s. Since I’ve been writing about a character from that same era lately, I thought it would be fun to put a spin on things and make a series of zines under the banner of Advice for New Witches. Here’s the first one — I’ll break the “pages” down here one by one for this format, but I’m also including a pdf of the full page that you can print out, cut, and fold into your own true zine. Who knows, maybe I’ll spread some around locally just for fun. If you’re so inclined, feel free to print off some and do the same. The world needs more witches!
